How to Choose the Right Solvent for Your Industrial Application
Selecting the right solvent is critical to achieving optimal performance in coatings, adhesives, cleaning, and chemical processing. This guide compares the major solvent families available from Chinese manufacturers and helps you match the right product to your application.
Ester Solvents
Esters are the workhorses of the coatings industry. Ethyl Acetate (CAS 141-78-6) offers fast evaporation and excellent for nitrocellulose and vinyl coatings. N-Butyl Acetate (CAS 123-86-4) provides slower evaporation, ideal for automotive topcoats where flow and leveling are critical. For specialty applications, Isopropyl Acetate (CAS 108-21-4) balances evaporation rate with good solvency for many resin systems.
Alcohol Solvents
Alcohols serve as both solvents and co-solvents. Isopropanol (CAS 67-63-0) is widely used for cleaning and as a coupling solvent. 1-Butanol (CAS 71-36-3) and 1-Propanol (CAS 71-23-8) are preferred for resin dissolution and as reaction media. Methanol (CAS 67-56-1) remains the most cost-effective alcohol for bulk applications, though its toxicity requires careful handling.
Glycol Ether Solvents
Glycol ethers offer excellent balance of evaporation rate and solvency. Butyl Glycol (CAS 111-76-2) is a staple in industrial coatings and cleaners. PM Solvent (CAS 107-98-2) and PMA Solvent (CAS 108-65-6) provide broader solvency for complex resin systems. DPM Solvent (CAS 34590-94-8) offers the slowest evaporation in this family, useful for high-solids coatings.
Chlorinated Solvents
For degreasing and vapor cleaning, chlorinated solvents remain unmatched. DCM (CAS 75-09-2) offers excellent degreasing power with low flammability. TCE (CAS 79-01-6) provides higher solvency for heavy grease removal. Both require proper ventilation and environmental compliance.
